Internet Marketing News: Ad Networks Agree to Anti Piracy Practices

Leading ad networks have agreed to a set of ‘best practices’ that will help to cut off ad revenues from websites that are either hosting pirate media or promoting the sale of counterfeit drugs. Ad networks including Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, AOL and 24/7 Media have all agreed to the practices, which will allow copyright holders to submit complaints about copyright and trademark infringement to ad networks.

Ad Networks Can Remove Adverts and Whole Websites

The final step is to remove the site from the ad network all together. Pressure has been mounting on Google and other search engines for some time to combat copyright infringement and counterfeit sales, though apparently many critics are still unhappy with the guidelines as they put the responsibility on the copyright holder to monitor for violations – not the ad network itself. However, in the light of the new guidelines Google has announced they have blocked more than 3 million bad ads from online pharmacies, while 46,000 sites have had ads disabled for violating copyright guidelines.

Copyright Infringement Has Always Been an Internet Marketing Issue

The new ‘best practices’ make ad networks and copyright holders work together to help reduce ‘financial incentives associated with copyright infringement,’ according to US Intellectual Property Enforcement Co-ordinator Victoria Espinel. Copyright infringement has always been an issue in the internet marketing industry so this news is sure to be well received.
