Our Internet Marketing Team Investigate the Yahoo Tumblr Takeover

As you’re no doubt aware, Yahoo has bought Tumblr for an impressive $1.1 billion. Even better, they have promised ‘not to screw it up.’

Tumblr is a Unique Social Platform...Will Yahoo! Help?

tumblrTumblr will continue to operate independently and David Karp will remain the CEO of the company; Yahoo!’s mission is to help Tumblr get even better and faster. Other than that, no changes have been announced, with Yahoo!’s own post on Tumblr saying, ‘ The product roadmap, their team, their wit and irreverence will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve.’ While the merger may seem an unlikely coupling, Yahoo! and Tumblr do complement each other; Yahoo! is the internet’s original search engine and is in need of something fresh, while Tumblr is the internet’s fastest growing media frenzy. Pairing the two together could just be a life saver for both companies – or it could be a death knell for Tumblr. As with all internet marketing news it’s too early to speculate, but with Yahoo! immediately benefitting from an audience of 300 million monthly users – over half of which log on through mobile – it’s looking more positive than negative.

Only Time Will Reveal the Results of the Takeover

But lo and behold, just a day after the takeover, Tumblr has already become an ad platform; something that Karp has publicly ‘spit on’ in the past. The last time Tumblr talked about advertising it was all about content marketing and creative design – not just any old banner ads. Though they are considering asking bloggers before they advertise, the Tumblr audience is known for its anti-establishment stance so there’s only one way to know how it will go – by waiting.
