Websites Must Adhere to Certain GuidelinesIf you have two websites, or more, as part of your network, these can be linked together without violating guidelines – especially if they are related, useful to each other and can be identified to be so by Google. The problem arises when thousands of links start appearing between a large number of sites that are unrelated; that would be a violation and you would most definitely be penalised. For all intents and purposes, that would be a link network – or at least look like one to Google. So how many sites is too many? In a recent video, Matt Cutts – the head of Google’s search spam team – said that 50, 80 or 150 can start looking over the top. As he quite rightly points out, there is no need to have an excessive number of sites like the numbers mentioned above, about any topic. While a small number of sites is fine (in the video he specified 5 or less though this is just an estimate) to link together, large numbers of websites linking together looks pretty suspicious. The bottom line is that linking a few websites together that are relevant and contain good quality content is perfectly fine – it’s when you start overstepping these marks and creating links between large numbers of websites that problems arise.
