Google Search Alternatives – What’s Out There

Google Search Alternatives – What’s Out There?

Google has been dominating the search engine sector for a number of years with a mobile and desktop search share of 88% in the US, according to a 2020 article by Semrush. With only 2 other well-known competitors in the form of Bing and Yahoo! – The MonkeyFish team have provided an informative list of alternative search engines for our clients to explore.

What’s the best Google alternative?

There is a wide variety of alternative search engines available on the internet and depending on what you’re looking for, so the best search engine alternative for you will vary. From Charity Search Engines, to Private Search Engines and beyond, there’s plenty of alternatives out there if you know where to look!

Charity Search Engines

Charity search engines donate a substantial amount, if not all, of their profits to charities. Examples of charity search engines include the likes of Ekoru, giveWater and Ecosia.

Ecosia

1. Ecosia

Through their search engine profits, Ecosia endeavours to plant trees across the globe as it strives for positive world-wide environmental change. With over 15 million active users, Ecosia works to protect users’ security and features common search experiences such as rich snippets, translation tools and conversion calculators – among other benefits.

give water

2. giveWater

Michael Freely, founder of giveWater, set out to combine his expertise in search and digital advertising with his passion for charitable causes.

With 663 million people currently drinking unclean water – the search engine giveWater, uses its revenue to fund access to clean water in some of the most deprived parts of the world.

giveWater provides a useful browser extension for users, in order for them to donate to their cause.

Ekora

3. Ekoru

As a privacy-first search engine, Ekoru could be considered another competitor to Google with a dedication to encrypting all of its users data and not storing any searches on their server.

Ekoru claims that every search contributes to their ability to raise funds in order to aid the Big Blue Clean Up.

What’s the best search engine for privacy?

When using search engine giants, significant search engine convenience can come with a lack of privacy control. Search engine users are becoming increasingly cybersecurity aware and over the years, search engines dedicated to the user’s privacy have started to gain traction. Discover three security focused search engine alternatives below:

Qwant

1. Qwant

French search engine Qwant, was launched in 2013 and is one of few search engines that has its own indexing engine as well as collaborating with search engine Bing, to harvest results that don’t impact on the user’s privacy. The geographical location of where Qwant is operated from is Paris and therefore it must adhere to strict GDPR regulations as set by the European Union.

Qwant endeavours to underline the importance of not customising search results, in order to save users from becoming trapped in a filter bubble.

DuckDuckGo

2. DuckDuckGo

Founded in 2008, DuckDuckGo (DDG) is one of the most prominent privacy conscious search engines gaining 1.5% share in the US search engine market, according to Semrush.

DuckDuckGo sets itself apart from other search engines by not characterising its users or collecting any data, as it provides the same search results to all users for the same search phrase. With a wealth of popular features such as Instant Answers, Bangs and Tor Access – DDG provides an edge for its users that isn’t often replicated with other search engines.

OneSearch

3. OneSearch

Boasting a multitude of search benefits such as no cookies, no tracking, keyword encryption, unfiltered results and no search history – OneSearch is the newest search engine on the block, provided by Verizon. With various strong configurations geared towards user privacy, OneSearch is owned by Yahoo! despite its results being powered by Bing.

How Do I Optimise My Website for Other Search Engines?

We have enlightened your minds with alternative search engines, but now, the question is how is optimising for each search engine different? There is no definitive answer to this question, as the type of search engine you choose to employ determines the best SEO practice.

However, most search engines deploy the same search engine optimisation practices as Google or Bing, with DuckDuckGo as an exception to this rule. To correctly optimise for either Bing or Google, you must look at the differences between them and tailor your SEO strategy to suit this. Moreover, it’s also important to make sure that optimisation for one, doesn’t damage optimisation for the other.
