WordPress, one of the most popular content management systems, turned ten years old yesterday. From humble beginnings as a fork of the little known blogging platform b2/Cafelog, WordPress is now used by over 70 million websites worldwide and powers a whopping 18% of the web.

The completely free software offers users a platform to build a fully functioning website, manage content, install widgets etc. As an open source project, WordPress now has thousands of contributors across the globe working on the site and constantly making improvements. Famous for its easy to use CMS, WordPress initially started out as a blogging platform but has now developed to include a whole range of tools and plugins including shopping carts, data analytics and anything else you could possibly need. WordPress is used by several high profile websites including blogs from CNN, the New York Times and Mashable – who says you have to pay for a high quality CMS?! WordPress was designed to make publishing content easy; ‘If writing is one of the hardest things to do, then figuring out how to publish your thoughts shouldn’t be,’ said Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress.

So what’s next for the world’s biggest blogging platform? Version 3.6 will be available soon and more contributors have joined the WordPress team to expand on the excellent work that has been underway for the past ten years. The goal of WordPress, in Mullenweg’s words, is for it to be the ‘platform or operating system’ of the web – and if current success is anything to go by, that goal isn’t too far out of reach.
